As the capital of Spain and one of the largest cities in Europe, Madrid has much to offer visitors to its bustling city streets. With a remarkable collection of architecture that includes the Palacio de Telecomunicaciones, the Royal Palace, the Puerto del Sol, the Plaza Mayor, the Catedral de la Almudena and the El Retiro park, it's not hard to see why Madrid is considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The Golden Museum Triangle and the National Archaeology Museum also prove consistently popular with visitors, as does the Corral de la Moreria (flamenco tablaos), Las Ventas bull-ring, and the Santiago Bernabeau Stadium (home to Real Madrid football team).
Madrid is an incredibly easy city to get into both from within Spain and from international destinations. Although it's land-locked position prevents it from being connected by ferry to any other cities, Madrid is fortunately the Spanish rail-hub and has multiple connections to European cities such as Lisbon, Paris, Milan and Zurich. Bus connections are also popular with several large termini within the city. Madrid's airport, Barajas International, is one of the busiest in Europe and sees well over fifty million passengers annually. Airlines such as Iberia, easyJet, Ryanair, Spanair, British Airways and Vueling Airlines use the facilities spread out amongst four large terminals. Due to Madrid's position in the very centre of Spain, car hire is recommended for exploring the surrounding region. Car hire companies such as National-Atesa, Europcar, Hertz and Avis are represented within the city. |
